Freedom From Fear - the campaign continues
More members than ever before have been involved in the Freedom From Fear campaign to help prevent violence and abuse against shopworkers.
Thanks to the hard work of so many members, retail staff are reaping the rewards. To date:
- Most major retailers are supporting our campaign and have set up working groups with Usdaw to implement measures to protect staff from violence and abuse.
- The Government has brought in the Anti-Social Behaviour Act which will help to deal with persistent offenders.
- There has been a massive increase in awareness of the problems faced by shopworkers. Retailers, the government and the public know about our campaign and it has received massive media coverage.
However, our members still face violence, threats and abuse, so the Freedom From Fear campaign is continuing.
In 2004 Usdaw plans:
- A Freedom From Fear fringe meeting at Labour's Spring Conference - 'How Local Councils can help Freedom From Fear' - Saturday 13 March 2004, 1.15 - 2.15pm at Manchester International Conference Centre.
- A fringe meeting at ADM, on Sunday 25 April, to launch the 2004 campaign.
- A survey from 17-23 May of the problems faced by shopworkers.
- A Respect for Shopworkers week, from 5-12 July, with a series of events, street stalls and activities.
- Advice for members on the new legislation on anti-social behaviour.
