Courses will give you new skills and knowledgeUsdaw has a comprehensive range of training courses available for members and reps across the country.The union offers first-class training for members who want to play a more active part in the union as well as for newly elected and more experienced reps. Home study coursesBooklets which offer an easy-to-read guide to Usdaw. Members complete these in their own time at home. Shop stewards' introductory courseA three-day introductory course aimed at new shop stewards, covering issues such as the role of the shop steward, grievance and disciplinary procedures and recruitment of new members. Shop stewards' follow-on courseA three or five-day follow-on course aimed at shop stewards who have been on the introductory course, with a more in-depth look at how to represent members. Health and safety reps' introductory courseA three-day introductory course aimed at new safety reps and designed to give reps the knowledge and skills needed to put the workers' point of view on health and safety issues. Health and safety reps' follow-on courseA three or five-day follow-on course aimed at health and safety reps who have been on the introductory course, with a more in-depth look at the issues important to union reps. Rights at workA two or three-day course aimed at more experienced reps who wish to build their understanding of the law at work. The course agenda is flexible, but will usually cover changes to contract, and new rights at work introduced since 1997. Maternity rightsA one or two-day course that provides an in-depth look at the law around maternity and the changes introduced over the past few years. One-off seminarsFor branches as and when requested, covering the topic of your choice such as, grievance and disciplinary hearings, and employer and union structures. Summer schoolsAnnual summer schools (first and second). Federation schoolsWeekend schools organised for branches affiliated to their local federation and covering specific topics, some of which have included employment law, the working tax credit, health and safety, public speaking and others. |
