Alun Williams - almost 30 years experience

Alun Williams comes from a family of trade unionists, although his route into Usdaw was unorthodox.

His father served on Usdaw's Executive Council for 31 years and retired just as Alun joined the union's staff in 1975 - three years after graduating from Leeds university.

Prior to his appointment Alun, now 53, had worked as a social worker and was an activist for public sector union NALGO.

He has worked out of the Swansea and Cardiff offices, covered all Usdaw trades, and seen massive changes in his 29 years.

"Anyone interested in helping others would enjoy being an organiser," he said. "It's not all plain sailing, but for any rep it's a career move well worth considering. Obviously you have to be committed to the cause and enjoy working with people, whether individually or collectively.

"But my advice to our reps would be 'go for it'. Get involved because it will do you good and will improve your chances at work and within the union. I'd certainly do it all again."
