New rights
Usdaw has launched a new leaflet, in conjunction with the Labour Party, the Muslim Council of Britain and the Coalition against Racism, which aims to inform Muslims of their new rights at work.
The Government has introduced a new right against discrimination at work on the grounds of religion or faith.
General Secretary Sir Bill Connor said: "Usdaw has always worked hard to make sure that people from every faith are able to accommodate their religious beliefs where they work. The new right will help us to do this. I am delighted to have the support of the Labour Party and of the Muslim Community for our work."
Councillor Ebrahim Adia, who is a member of Usdaw, is the leaflet's principal author: "We want to point out all that Labour has done for Muslims over the past few years, and also inform people of their new rights against discrimination at work on the grounds of their religion."
Councillor Afzal Khan, the North West spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Britain said: "We are delighted that these new rights have been introduced. They are even more important for many Muslims at the moment who are suffering abuse or harassment because of their beliefs."
Councillor Mohammed Azam added the endorsement of the Coalition against Racism: "We will have a hard battle against the British National Party in the next few months leading up to the European and local elections in June 2004. We need to ensure that as many people as possible vote for a mainstream party to defeat racism."
