Sainsbury depot in strike ballot

Workers at the Sainsbury distribution centre in Haydock, Merseyside, were balloting on industrial action (as Network went to press) after wage negotiations broke down.

Members were promised £8 an hour, by 2004, during wage negotiations in 2002. However, the company's latest offer falls short of that pledge and workers could be out on strike before Christmas.

If the 800 strong workforce vote in favour of industrial action, a series of one day stoppages is planned if an improved offer is not forthcoming.
