Government funding will aid fight against crime
A new national action group funded by the Government will see the Home Office, the British Retail Consortium, local authorities and the police combine to tackle retail crime.
Home Office Minister Hazel Blears has announced £900,000 will be made available, over the next two years, to the Action Against Business Crime Group, to build partnerships between all of the agencies involved in fighting crime. Training will also be made available. "We have a dedicated business crime team at the Home Office," said Hazel Blears. "But we know there is much more work to do. Businesses must play a greater part in the fight against crime. By working together in partnership we can ensure action on the ground makes a real difference to business owners."
The minister also joined Usdaw officials and delegates at a specially arranged fringe meeting at the Labour Party conference. The union's Freedom From Fear campaign was showcased and won widespread support from MPs at all levels of Government.
- Meanwhile police in Northampton have urged retailers to evict known shoplifters and persistent offenders from their stores before they commit a crime. They argue this will stop officers being caught up in time-consuming paperwork.
