Disability should be no bar to work

More than 35,000 trade union reps across the UK will be trained by the TUC to ensure that employers do not use health and safety as an excuse to discriminate against disabled workers.

To coincide with the European Year of Disability, the TUC wants to crack down on employers who give bogus safety reasons for not employing disabled workers or preventing them from doing certain types of work.

A TUC spokesperson said: "There are 700,000 unfilled jobs in the UK, despite one million unemployed disabled people wanting to work.

"They are able to work but unscrupulous employers are preventing them from doing so on bogus safety grounds. From this month union reps will be prepared to challenge these discriminating employers and ensure that disabled employees can work and work safely."
