questions

Can I take a longer period of maternity leave?

questions

Women who have completed 26 weeks’ continuous employment with their employer are entitled to additional maternity leave (AML).

answers

  • To qualify for AML, the 26 weeks continuous employment must be completed by the beginning of the 14th week before the expected week of childbirth.
  • Additional maternity leave begins when ordinary maternity leave ends, and it runs for a further 26 weeks (giving 52 weeks' maternity leave altogether).
  • You can return to work before the end of AML, but you must give 28 days' notice.
  • If you cannot return on the notified date because of illness, you will be considered to have ended your maternity leave but then gone on to contractual sick leave.
