questions

Can my employer make me work alone?

questions

For most jobs, yes they can. There are only a handful of very dangerous jobs where regulations say you can't work alone. However, a risk assessment must be done to ensure any risks are identified and control measures are put in place.

answers

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, employers are required to complete a risk assessment if there is a danger to the health and safety of their employees. Working alone in most cases is relatively safe but there are occasions when extra precautions will be required. Working with money, in off licences and where young people are employed are some examples. The risk assessment should look at the type of operation being undertaken - are you working with dangerous chemicals or machinary etc, can you contact assistance, are you remote from other people and so on.
