questions

Who is classed as a young worker?

questions

A young worker is anyone who has reached the minimum school leaving age but is below 18 years old.

answers

Measures to protect young workers were introduced in 2003 and include the following:

40 hours a week, 8 hours in any one-day; and night working between 10 pm - 6 am or 11 pm - 7 am should be prohibited. The 40-hour week/8-hour day rules are absolute. Unlike the 48-hour week for adults they are not averaged over a reference period. If the young person works for more than one employer the hours should be aggregated.

A full guide is available from the Health and Safety section at Central office.
