Claim what's yours – It's as easy as ABC - Getting your MP on boardDate: 05 May 2009
Usdaw Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day - 3 June 2009. Claim what's yours - It's as easy as ABC
IntroductionUsdaw is involved in politics to win improvements for our members. Sometimes issues cannot be resolved by negotiation with employers and we need the intervention of Government. You can make a real impact by getting your own Labour MP or Euro Candidate out campaigning with you on Spotlight Day. Labour MPs and Euro Candidates want to help Usdaw members and support our campaigns. Spotlight Day is 3 June, which is also eve of poll for the European elections. This means that your Labour MP or Euro Candidate is likely to be available to help out on your campaign stand.
Who is my MP?To find your MP please visit: www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/ and enter your postcode. Alternatively you can telephone the House of Commons on 020 7219 3000 and say that you want to find out who your MP is.
How to invite your MPThe best way to make sure that your MP or Euro candidate turns up is to give them as much notice as possible. Please bear in mind that they are busy people, whose diaries are filled very quickly.Once you have found out who your MP is, as advised above, you can send them a letter, e-mail or telephone them to invite them to attend your event.
Campaign standsHaving an MP or Euro Candidate at your campaign stand can help bring the media along and get some good coverage in your local newspapers and radio. It's also a great way of making contact or keeping in touch with the local Labour Party. If the media don't turn up, then take a picture and send it through to them and please send a copy to Usdaw so that we can use it in Arena and Network. If your campaign stand is at your place of work, you will need to contact your manager and ask for their agreement to organise the campaign stand on their premises and to invite an MP or Euro Candidate. See below for 10 Top Tips for organising a successful campaign stand in your workplace. Finally.....Let us know how you got on! Once you have been to see your MP let us know how you got on by telephoning the Equalities Section on 0161 224 2804 or e-mailing equalitymatters@usdaw.org.uk or writing a note to the Equalities Section, Usdaw, 188 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, M14 9LJ. This will enable us to build a picture of how the campaign is going across the country and feed this back to you and other members campaigning on this issue.
