Claim what’s yours – It’s as easy as ABC (Leaflet 370)

A guide to benefit rights for working parents.

Usdaw wants to make sure that our members who are juggling paid work with bringing up children know about the benefits they are entitled to and understand how to claim them. This leaflet explains what benefits working parents can and should claim.

  • Child Benefit - Paid to everyone who is responsible for bringing up a child.
  • Tax Credits - Nine out of 10 families qualify for Tax Credits.
  • £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant - Paid to low income parents when a new baby is born.
  • £190 Health in Pregnancy Grant - Paid to all pregnant women from the 25th week of pregnancy.
  • Child Trust Fund - Parents with children born after 1 September 2002 can claim a £250 voucher to invest in their child's future.

Get advice!

This leaflet is aimed at parents who are working and parents and women who are about to, or have recently had a baby. It gives general guidance only. It is not a complete guide to the law. The law changes and everyone's situation is different. For detailed advice about individual circumstances, please get advice!
