Disability at Work – Tackling Discrimination, Organising the Workplace

Date: 01 February 2008

Disability at Work – Tackling Discrimination, Organising the Workplace
Disability at Work – Tackling Discrimination, Organising the Workplace

An Executive Council Statement to the 2008 Annual Delegate Meeting – Disability at Work.

Talk to any Usdaw rep and the chances are they will have supported or represented a disabled member at work. Disability in the workplace is becoming a bigger trade union issue.

This ADM Statement is intended to help reps to do two things - support disabled members at work and help raise the Union's profile on workplace disability issues.

Discrimination against disabled people at work is still widespread and Usdaw reps are doing a vitally important job in trying to win disabled workers a better deal.

This ADM Statement is written in a way that you will hopefully find easy to read. It has clear sections you can dip in and out of, rather than having to read through the whole document at one go. We've kept it as short as possible, free from lots of statistics and long policy statements.

The statement is designed as a practical guide for reps providing the answers you need to questions like:

  • How do I know if a member is disabled?
  • What do I do if the company won't agree that someone is disabled?
  • Can a disabled worker be sacked for poor performance?

Week in, week out Usdaw reps are making a difference. I am committed to giving you the support you need in this work. This statement can act as a reps' guide and help support reps on workplace disability issues.

Disabled members need the support of their Union and you, the reps, are delivering for disabled members and are helping to make a difference.
