Supporting Parents and Carers' Campaign – Fair Play for Working Carers.

Spotlight Day - Wednesday 11 June 2008

Dear Colleague

We need your help with Usdaw's campaign to win a better deal for working carers.

Wednesday 11 June is Usdaw's Carers' Spotlight Day. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the difficult job carers do, juggling paid work with caring for someone. We are also looking to persuade Government to improve their support for carers.

There has never been a more important time for working carers. The Government will shortly be announcing new rights and benefits for carers which could make a real difference to thousands of our members. Usdaw has been campaigning for these changes - changes which could put more money in members' pockets to help them cope with the costs of caring for someone who is elderly or disabled.

Last year, hundreds of Usdaw reps helped the Union make the case for better rights for working carers by organising events on our Spotlight Day. I hope that you will be able to get involved this year by:

  • Giving out leaflets about carers' rights.
  • Asking members and non members to sign the Usdaw petition
  • Putting posters up on workplace noticeboards.
  • Talking to members about the Union's campaign
  • Organising a street stall to help promote the Union's message.

Inside the pack you will find all you need to get involved on Spotlight Day including an order form for your campaign materials. Please do whatever you can to get involved and to help Usdaw win a better deal for carers.

If you require further information about the Spotlight Day please do not hesitate to contact Ruth or Jo in our Equalities Office on 0161 249 2451.

Best wishes.

Yours sincerely

John Hannett
General Secretary
