Date: 30 January 2007

Supporting Parents and<br> Carers Campaign - reps briefing No.2
Supporting Parents and
Carers Campaign - reps briefing No.2

This is the second of our parents and carers bargaining briefings. It will bring you up to date with the successes we are having in negotiating better rights for parents and carers. The first briefing covered January to June 2005. This briefing covers June to September 2005.

The next bargaining brief will be produced in December. It will focus on the strategies we have used to win improvements for parents and carers.

The current position is as follows:

  • Almost half of our members - 48% - are covered by agreements that have been improved as a direct result of the campaign.
  • 50% of our women members (one in every two) and more than one-third of men (39%) are covered by agreements that have now been improved since the campaign started.

Maternity Pay

Simmers of Edinburgh

Maternity pay is paid at 90% of average earnings for the entire 26 week ordinary maternity leave period.

Littlewoods Shop Direct Group

Following the merger of Littlewoods Home Shopping and Shop Direct - new business units have been established that negotiate terms and conditions separately via their own bargaining forums. Every Day Financial Solutions (one of the new units) has negotiated full pay for the first eight weeks of maternity leave with the remaining 18 weeks of ordinary maternity leave paid at SMP of £106 per week. This applies to all new starters. Negotiations for existing staff are ongoing.

Paternity Pay

Tesco

From July 2005, fathers and partners who qualify for paternity leave will be entitled to receive normal pay for the first two weeks. This is a significant step forward as fathers/partners that take their statutory two weeks' leave at the time of their baby's birth will not lose out financially.

Before this, only the first week of paternity leave was paid at normal earnings, the second week was paid at the statutory minimum of £106.

Simmers of Edinburgh

The two week statutory period of paternity leave is paid at 80% of average earnings.

Littlewoods Shop Direct Group

Every Day Financial Solutions (one of the new business units developed following the merger of Littlewoods Home Shopping and Shop Direct) has negotiated full pay for the entire two week statutory paternity pay period for new starters. Negotiations concerning existing members of staff are ongoing.

Morrisons

From August 2005, pay during paternity leave will be increased from the first three days at basic contractual pay to the first five days at basic contractual pay. The second week's leave will be paid at the statutory minimum, currently £106 per week. Staff with one year's service or more will qualify for this improvement in pay.

Adoption Pay

Littlewoods Shop Direct Group

Every Day Financial Solutions (one of the new business units developed following the merger of Littlewoods Home Shopping and Shop Direct) has negotiated full pay for the first eight weeks of Statutory Adoption Leave, with the remaining 18 weeks leave of ordinary adoption leave paid at SAP of £106 per week. This applies to all new starters.

Bereavement Leave

At Arla Foods Old Express, the offer out to ballot includes five days paid bereavement leave for grandparents.

Flexible Working Arrangements

Moto Hospitality Ltd (part of the Compass Group)

A work/life balance working party has been set up to consider work/life balance issues and flexible working arrangements.

Redcats

At Every Day Financial Solutions staff can take five non-consecutive single shifts as holiday, at short notice, to be used for family and other caring emergencies.
