Carers in Usdaw

Date: 30 May 2005

Carers in Usdaw
Carers in Usdaw

Many thousands of our members play a vital role caring for disabled, elderly and vulnerable relatives and friends. Unfortunately carers often receive very little recognition or support for the valuable role they play.

These are the words of just some of the Usdaw members who have taken part in our parents and carers survey.

They give some idea of the pressures our members are under in juggling paid work with being a carer at home.

"Pressure and more pressure, the dreadful feeling when the phone rings and you have to ask for time off..."

"My mum is regularly committed to hospital - usually at the drop of a hat...my personnel manager refuses to recognise me as a carer because my mum's condition fluctuates..."

"The pressure of looking after my elderly mum and working full-time was getting too much for me...I had no support whatsoever from my employer...I had to leave because I felt if I had a breakdown I would be no use to my mum."

Our Supporting Parents and Carers campaign aims to improve the situation for carers at work by relieving some of the enormous pressures members' with caring commitments are currently under.

What do we want

We want carers in Usdaw to have:

The Right to Request Flexible Working

At the moment only parents of young children have the right to ask their employer for a change in their working hours to help them with their caring commitments.

We want carers to have this right. The Labour Government has said it will do this and we really welcome this. However we want to make sure that when carers get this right, we have the broadest possible definition of who is a carer under the legislation.

Paid time off for family illness

We also want carers to have the right to paid time off work at times of family illness or emergency. At the moment the only right is to unpaid time off for dependants. In some cases Usdaw has been successful in negotiating paid time off for family illness with employers.

One of the negotiating aims of our Parents and Carers campaign is paid family leave agreements.

A clearer understanding of their rights

We are working hard to make sure members with caring commitments know about their rights.

Many carers in Usdaw don't know about their rights to Time off for Dependants. Many more won't know about the rights that Usdaw has negotiated for them, rights like paid family leave, flexible working hours, the right to take holiday leave at short notice for family illness and paid time off for family hospital appointments.

Our new working carers leaflet will help to raise awareness of carers rights.

Better access to carers allowance

Carer's Allowance is the main state benefit for carers. Carer's Allowance is currently worth £45.70 a week.

Usdaw believes the level of Carers Allowance is too low. We also want government to raise the amount someone can earn and still qualify for Carers Allowance. Currently if you earn more than £82 a week you can't claim.

Some basic facts about carers

  • Around 1 in 8 people in the UK are carers, most of them looking after elderly people.
  • The majority of carers are women.
  • The peak age for becoming a carer is between 45 and 64.
  • The amount of time carers spend looking after someone is on the increase.
