Maternity and parental rights - a guide for Usdaw reps (Leaflet 325)Date: 01 April 2008
This booklet is designed to help you deal with queries and to support pregnant women and new mothers at work. It provides a basic, easy to understand guide to maternity, paternity and adoption pay and leave. It also covers parental leave, time off for dependants and the right to request flexible working. This booklet is designed to help union representatives assist and represent pregnant women and new mothers at work. It gives clear, up to date information on maternity rights and benefits. The rights set out in this booklet are legal entitlements. They can be added to, but not reduced by individual employers. This Labour Government has done a great deal to improve rights for new parents since they took office in 1997. But improved rights on their own are not enough. Women have to know about their rights and feel confident to use them. This is why the role of the Usdaw rep is so important. Our reps do a fantastic job in helping pregnant women and new mothers get a fair deal at work. Thank you for all that you do on behalf of your members. Finally, don't forget that help and advice is always available. Maternity rights can seem complex and confusing so don't hesitate to get in touch if you need to. You can contact your Area Organiser or the Women and Equalities Section at Central Office who will be happy to help.
