Extended Leave: an advice booklet for union representatives (Leaflet 293)Date: 23 July 2009
This booklet is about Extended Leave agreements which enable workers visiting relatives overseas to take time off work for a longer period than could be accommodated using their normal holiday entitlement. Why is it important? Many Usdaw members have close family connections in distant parts of the world such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada. They may wish to visit these countries from time to time. A report called Black and White in Britain, published by the Policy Studies Institute, found that two out of three Asian workers who had left their jobs had done so to make visits to their country of origin. Because there were no extended leave facilities, they had to choose between keeping their family ties and keeping their job. No worker should be faced with this choice. Extended leave arrangements, of course, benefit all workers. They assist employees to deal with personal crises, such as family bereavements and allow people to widen their experiences and interests and keep in touch with family members overseas. Extended Leave: an advice booklet for union representatives (Leaflet 293) was correct at date of publication July 2009.
