6) Time off for religious festivals

Usdaw has produced guidance for reps to help them negotiate time off and workplace facilities for members that have religious beliefs other than Christianity.

This issue is particularly important at the moment given the fact that new regulations are come into force in December protecting workers from discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief.

For Usdaw the main impact of this new right is probably going to centre on religious observance at work. So, for instance, an observant Muslim employee who goes to the mosque on a Friday and whose employer does not accommodate this could claim that his employer was discriminating against him on the grounds of religion.

For more information on the new equalities regulations read the Usdaw briefing or visit the Acas web site for guidance.

For a copy of the guidance and a list of religious festivals for the year 2005 contact the Stationery Department telephone 0161-224 2804.
