4) Update on Amina Lawal’s case

Usdaw’s Race Relations Committee has been closely following the progress of Amina Lawal’s appeal against the sentence of death by stoning imposed by a Shariah Court in March 2002. We are pleased to be able to report that Amina Lawal’s appeal, heard on the 25 September 2003, was successful and the sentence of death quashed.

According to her defence lawyer Amina Lawal was freed from the threat of punishment on the grounds that neither the conviction nor the confession were legally valid. This meant that no offence as such was established.
