1) Race Equality
We know that racism is still and alive well in the UK in the 21st Century. Racist harassment, abuse and attacks are still part and parcel of everyday life for our Black and Asian members, particularly where our members are in jobs that bring them into contact with members of the public.
Fighting racism is an ongoing priority for Usdaw. As racism is there in the workplace, in the community and within organisations, so challenging it is always on our agenda.
Usdaw does have a National Race Relations Committee. The Committee gives our Black and Asian members a voice within the Union and at work. The Committee also encourages our Black and Asian members to get involved and offers support to our members on the ground. They guide and advise the union on what issues are relevant to our Black and Asian members and help to make sure that these issues are put onto our agenda.
Throughout the year the Race Relations Committee work on many different projects and are involved in all kinds of activities. Below are just a few examples of the Committee's achievements.
- Produced a campaign/training video called 'Racism is No Joke' and anti-racist campaign materials. See below for more details.
- Organised Get-togethers and social events for Black and Asian members.
- Produced leaflets on a broad range of subjects including Racial Harassment and Extended Leave. For copies of these leaflets please contact the Stationery Department.
- Help to organise and run our annual conference for Black and Asian members - 'Black Members Weekend Workshop'.
- Invite guest speakers to meeting to talk about issue that matter to our minority ethnic community members.
- Has worked closely with the National Association Against Racism to counter the threat posed by the British National Party.
- Were involved in a new kind of recruitment event at last year's multicultural 'Respect' Festival in London, distributing bananas to highlight the exploitation of banana plantation workers and to stress the importance of trade union membership.
The Race Relations Committee has very recently been re-formed and its term of office is for three years. However, if you would like to get involved please let the Women and Equalities Section know or call your local Usdaw office. At the moment there are no vacancies on the Committee but there are one or two reserve vacancies and things may change over time.
We also have a 'Black Activists' mailing list. We send information that is of specific interest to our minority ethnic community activists on this list. If you want to be on the mailing list, let the Women and Equalities Section know.
