You can claim £190 to help bring up your baby

27 May 2009

As part of the Parents’ and Carers’ Spotlight Day on 3 June, Usdaw is campaigning to inform working parents of their rights.

Shopworkers’ union, Usdaw, is encouraging expectant working mothers to claim the new £190 Health in Pregnancy Grant.

The money will be a real help to Usdaw member, Christiana Hedd, who is expecting her second baby in June:

“I have applied for the £190 Health in Pregnancy Grant. I’m deciding on the best way to use the money and have been looking for deals on buggies, beds and changing tables. It is expensive making sure I have everything ready for the baby, so this money will definitely be a big help.”

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said:

“2009 is proving to be a tough year for many of our members. The global recession means that many working parents are worried about money. Usdaw wants to do all it can to help families who are struggling to make ends meet.

“That’s why this year’s Spotlight Day is focused on making sure working parents know about their benefit rights and understand how to go about claiming the money that’s theirs.

“There is a proven link between financial support for mothers and a better start in life for children. Usdaw supports the Government’s aim to end child poverty by 2020 and welcomes this new grant as a step in the right direction.”
