Usdaw calls for equal pay for women10 September 2008Shopworkers’ union, Usdaw, has called for more to be done to close the gender pay gap that still exists. The union made the call as part of the debate at the TUC on the Equality Bill, which calls for the private sector to be duty bound to recognise all types of equality. It also calls for all strands of equality protection to be given equal status and for all resulting legislation to be vigorously enforced. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, commented: “Despite almost 40 years of equal pay legislation, the gender pay gap continues to exist. We want employers to make sure that they conduct meaningful equal pay audits on a regular basis. “I am passionate about protecting workers’ rights and especially those who have traditionally found themselves subject to discrimination at work. This includes strengthening the rights of vulnerable and agency workers, women and those facing redundancy. “Usdaw exists to provide a collective voice to thousands of individuals in the workplace. At the TUC we have spoken with one voice with other unions in order to make the voice of working people even stronger.” Notes to Editors:
