Take part in Usdaw's Divisional Equalities Forum

15 September 2008

Usdaw is looking for members who want to get more involved in the Union’s equalities work.

Members can nominate themselves to sit on their Divisional Equalities Forum. There is a forum in each division with space for ten lay members. The forums are there to encourage members who are under involved in the Union to get more active. Women, Black and Asian members, the disabled and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members are eligible to nominate themselves.

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, explained:

"The work of the Equalities Forums is at the heart of what we do as a Union - reaching out to members, making sure we are taking up the issues that matter to them and securing fairness and equality for all.

"As General Secretary I have the highest regard for the work of the forums and I know that the members involved in this work feel valued and listened to in what they do. I would strongly encourage members to put their name forward for the forums and to join what is an exciting and fast moving area of Usdaw's work."

If you are interested in getting involved, you can download the nomination form below. Once completed, please send it to the address on the bottom of the form.

Here’s what some of the current forum members have to say about being involved.

Simon Wright
"Being on the forum is not about sitting in meetings – we get out in the divisions, running workshops for reps, holding stalls at festivals, leafleting shopping centres. We are active and involved."

David Chadwick
"You get loads of support on the forum – training when you start and help along the way. Don’t be put off by the form – go for it. You’ll learn a lot and grow your confidence as well."

Sonia Foster
"You are part of a team that gives other members the confidence to get involved. When you see a member come along to an event organised by the forum – someone who has never been to anything before – that’s a really great feeling."

Maureen Williams
"Without the forums, issues like disability and racism at work would not be on our agenda. Being on the forum means you get listened to and you can help decide what the Union is going to do about these issues."
