Usdaw welcomes a rise in tax credits to benefit low-paid staff

12 March 2008

Retail union, Usdaw, has welcomed Alistair Darling’s budget announcement of a rise in tax credits that will benefit shopworkers and other low-paid staff who do not have children.

Usdaw General Secretary, John Hannett, commented:

“Working tax credit has been available to people without children for several years, and Usdaw has helped many of our 358,000 members to claim. We are pleased that the Government has now extended the tax credit to include more low-paid workers and increased the amount they will receive, so that they will be able to enjoy a better standard of living.

“However, many of our members are still unaware that they are eligible for this credit, so Usdaw will be running a campaign in the coming months to promote the extra money and new entitlements available.”

Working Tax Credit is available to all low-paid workers. To qualify for the Credit a person must:

  • Be over 25 years old
  • Work at least 30 hours a week
  • Be on an income below:
  • - £12,700 a year (£245 a week) if single
    - £17,200 a year (£330 a week) joint income if in a couple.
