Supporting parents with school age children17 August 2005
Usdaw will be having a campaign spotlight day on the pressures facing parents with school age children on Wednesday 7 September 2005. This forms part of our Supporting Parents and Carers campaign and we will be trying to do three things on the day: • To raise awareness of the pressures facing Usdaw members who have school age children. • To raise awareness of the work Usdaw is doing to support parents at work. • To urge government and employers to do more for parents with school age children. Many thousands of our members find it really tough getting hours of work that fit in with taking the kids to and from school. School holidays and closure days are also a major problem when parents have to go to work. You can support the day by doing any of the following: • Ordering copies of leaflets on working parents and time off for family emergencies and give copies to members and non members in your workplace. • Getting colleagues, family and friends to sign our petition which calls for stronger rights for parents with school age children. • Holding a ‘Supporting Parents’ stall on 7 September – if you have a staff canteen this is usually the best place for a stall. • Ask your MP to visit your workplace to talk to parents about the pressures they face. You can get help on how to set up an MP’s workplace visit by contacting the Usdaw politics section on 0161 224 2804.
