Speak out against racism11 October 2004Spat at on the street, passed over for promotion, verbally abused by customers. These are just some of the experiences Usdaw’s black and Asian members talk about on a new hard-hitting video called Racism is No Joke. The video, produced by Usdaw’s race relations committee, features Usdaw’s black and Asian members talking frankly about racism and racist abuse at work and in the community. The video proves that racism is still alive and well in Britain today despite nearly 30 years of race equality legislation. The video (which is about ten minutes long) shows the kinds of problems our black and Asian members face such as: - Racist name-calling. - Being turned down for jobs and passed over for promotion because of the colour of their skin. - So-called racist ‘jokes’ and banter in the workplace. It also captures instances of where reps, both black and white, have taken a stand against racism and made a difference. Women and Equalities Officer Ruth Cross believes the video will be a vital resource for training/education courses. “The video gives a voice to our black and Asian members,” she said. “We hope to bring that voice to members who think that racism is a thing of the past. “The video is there to raise awareness of the impact racism has and we’re sure that reps will find it a useful tool in their fight against racism at work.” Notes to Editors • Usdaw (the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) is the UK’s fifth biggest trade union, with over 338,000 members.
