Are pregnant women treated fairly? Usdaw wants your views08 January 2004Usdaw members are urged to take part in Britain's first comprehensive investigation into pregnancy discrimination at work. Shocking cases of pregnant women being sacked, refused promotion or downgraded have already come to light in recent research. Some pregnant women also faced unfair changes to salary terms and shift hours. The Equal Opportunities Commission's helpline gets more calls on pregnancy and maternity issues than any other type of enquiry. Now the EOC has embarked on a huge consultation exercise. The aim is to create a clear picture of the scale of the problem in Britain, before making recommendations to the Trade and Industry Secretary. Around two-thirds of Usdaw's 331,000 members are women, making the trade union a natural choice to take part in this exercise. You can play your part in this important consultation in either, or both, of two ways. 1) Download, complete and return the Usdaw questionnaire. The deadline for return of these questionnaires is Friday 5th March 2004. If you want bulk copies of the questionnaire, to distribute among colleagues, contact Usdaw's Women and Equalities section on 0161-224 2804. 2) You can also take part in Usdaw's online poll. More background information on the investigation is available on the EOC web site. Notes:
