Major new Government consultation on domestic violence
28 November 2003
In August we told you about the Government’s proposals on how they can best protect women and children escaping domestic violence. As they were particularly keen to hear from women survivors of violence we surveyed our members and received over 150 completed surveys back.
To give you a taste of the nature of the responses below are some of the key findings:
- All of the respondents were women.
- More than one third of the women that responded had experienced domestic violence.
- 76% of those who had experienced violence had children at that time. 78% of women indicated that their child or children had witnessed the violence.
- More than 50% of children continued to have contact with the violent partner after separation.
We have now responded to Government. You can now download a full copy of Usdaw's response to the consultation.
We'd like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to every woman that took the time to complete and return the surveys to us.
