Usdaw welcomes new laws against discrimination03 December 2003New regulations to prevent discrimination in the workplace on grounds of sexual orientation and religion or belief came into force this week - and received a warm welcome from leading retail union Usdaw. Usdaw wants to ensure its members are fully aware of the new protection afforded by the Employment Equality Regulations 2003, and is currently preparing advice leaflets for members and officials. Sir Bill Connor, Usdaw General Secretary, said today: "This legislation makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment on the grounds of sexual orientation, religion or belief. It applies to all employers and businesses, whether in the public or private sector, and it gives new rights with regards to recruitment, terms and conditions, pay, promotion, transfers and dismissals. "Discrimination will not be tolerated by Usdaw. People should not be denied jobs, suffer victimisation or harassment, because of prejudice." More information is available now through the TUC's working life web site, or through the Department of Trade and Industry web site. For further information Read Usdaw's leaflet Labour supporting Muslim communities (Leaflet 336).
