1) TUC Disability ConferenceUsdaw’s new equalities structures Usdaw will be sending a lay delegation to this year’s TUC Disability Conference. The 2007 Conference will be held at Congress House, London, from Wednesday 23 May to Thursday 24 May. Disability is rarely visible and affects at least one in eight workers. Diabetes, learning difficulties, hearing and other sensory impairments (to name but a few) are all disabilities that generally cannot be seen by others. We do need to be careful to avoid making assumptions about who is or is not disabled when seeking nominations. For example, we are not able to identify potential delegates to the TUC Disability Conference simply by looking around our workplaces. To try to ensure the best possible result we need to let as many reps and members know about the Conference as possible. By 'casting our net as widely' as possible we will inevitably reach some disabled reps and members. We need to rely on them to identify themselves as disabled and give them the opportunity to express an interest in attending. For this reason you might find circulating the TUC Disability Conference 2007 poster to as many reps and members as possible helpful in 'recruiting' for the Conference. The poster can be displayed on workplace noticeboards. Each person that expresses an interest will need to complete a nomination form as we have to give details to the TUC of delegates' access requirements at the same time as we submit names. A copy of the nomination form and poster is available to download as a PDF at the bottom of this page. The form can be photocopied and must be returned to the Divisional Officers by Friday 2 March at the very latest. Divisional Councils will then agree a nomination that will go to the Executive Council for endorsement in March. For further information please contact the Equalities Section at Central Office.
