4) Tax Credits

In April this year, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit were introduced and replaced Disabled Person's Tax Credits. The new Tax Credits work along very similar lines. They top up the low income wages of people in work.

For disabled workers there are three qualifing criteria:

  • Must work at least 16 hours a week.
  • Have a physical or mental disability that puts you at a disadvantage in getting a job.
  • Are in receipt of, or have recently been getting a qualifying benefit.
It is definitely worth checking out. There is only one form to fill in. You will need your P60 and national insurance number. If you have children you may also qualify for Child Tax Credit. If you have disabled children you may qualify for more Tax Credits.
You can get a form by telephoning the Tax Credit Helpline on 0845 300 3900 or 0845 603 2000 (Northern Ireland), from a tax enquiry or advice centre, or claim online by visiting the Inland Revenue web site. There is a calculator on the web site that tells you whether or not you qualify.
Usdaw has also produced guidance for reps on the new tax credits.
