Disability1) TUC Disability ConferenceUsdaw’s new equalities structures Usdaw will be sending a lay delegation to this year’s TUC Disability Conference. The 2007 Conference will be held at Congress House, London, from Wednesday 23 May to Thursday 24 May. 2) Disability A growing number of disabled people are entering the labour market. This, combined with important new rights to fair treatment, means disability is very much an Usdaw issue. 3) Help finding a job Nearly one in five people of working age in the UK have a long-term disability that affects their ability for work. Only 47% of these people are in work. Many more would like to work, but have not had the opportunity or support to do so. The Labour Government have set up assistance and worked with employers and trade unions to increase opportunities for people with disabilities to work if they are able to, so that they improve their income and quality of life. 4) Tax Credits In April this year, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit were introduced and replaced Disabled Person's Tax Credits. The new Tax Credits work along very similar lines. They top up the low income wages of people in work. 5) Help for carers Carer's Allowance is paid to full-time carers. 6) Security for those who cannot work The following benefits are available to those who cannot work. Some can also be claimed by those in work who are on a low income. 7) Protecting retirement pension If you are caring for someone for at least 35 hours a week, you may be able to get Home Responsibilities Protection to help protect your basic retirement pension and you may receive other benefits 8) Your rights at work The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) prohibits discrimination against job applicants, employees or contractors who have a disability by employers of more than 15 people. 9) New leaflet on representing disabled members Usdaw has produced a new leaflet for reps about how best to represent disabled members at work. Research shows that one in seven people has a disability and thousands of disabled workers face discrimination every day at work. This is therefore an issue that is bound to affect hundreds of our members. TUC Disability Petition Usdaw is fully committed to supporting the TUC’s petition calling on Government to make significant changes as a matter of urgency to the Disability Discrimination Act via its promised new Disability Bill. |
