Home Campaigns Campaign for recognition at Marks Further Information
On your Marks, Get set, Grow18 December 2006Usdaw has launched a national recruitment drive at Marks and Spencer after a survey of members found strong support for an independent trade union within the high street giant. Members and officials handed out leaflets to staff outside M&S stores across the UK during a day of action in October. The union's own survey revealed that 82 per cent of union members at M&S believed the support of a trade union would help them secure better terms and conditions and more respect from management. Usdaw is seeking a formal agreement with M&S to allow the union to represent staff. "This recruitment drive is being led by our existing members within M&S who tell us that many of their colleagues would be interested in joining Usdaw," said general secretary John Hannett. "Our members know our vast experience in the retail sector can help to protect their terms and conditions. Over the last couple of years M&S has made significant changes to the way it operates and we believe we can play a positive role in helping the workforce. "We are a progressive union that prides itself on a partnership approach. I believe we can work with the company to help make sure their recent revival in fortune continues. "It's clear M&S workers want an independent trade union and one which knows the retail sector inside out, so the more people who join the greater pressure there will be for M&S to talk to us about a formal recognition agreement."
