Spotlight shines on March

30 November 2009

Next year Usdaw is bringing Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day forward to 24 March with a fresh new look and updated campaign materials.

The 'Claim It' theme will remain as this year's Spotlight Day survey revealed there are still very low levels of awareness of key benefits for working parents such as the Health in Pregnancy Grant, the Sure Start Maternity Grant and the Child Trust Fund.

Reps did a great job last year of letting members know about sources of financial support for working parents. We want to continue that trend and help to put more money into members' pockets by getting the message out to even more of our members next year.

We also want to make sure that Spotlight Day 2010 helps build support for the union's general election campaign.

In addition to the benefits mentioned, the Labour Government has also:

  • Introduced and extended the Right to Request Flexible Working. It is now available to parents of children aged under 17 (or 18 for parents of disabled children) and carers of adults.
  • Extended the period of paid maternity leave from just 18 weeks to 39 weeks and more than doubled statutory maternity pay.
  • Introduced the right to paternity and adoption pay and leave for the very first time.

Watch this space to find out more about Spotlight Day 2010 and what you can to do to make sure it is another great success.
