Maternity leave boost

04 June 2009

The extension of paid maternity leave to 12 months, with nine of these paid, and the introduction of two weeks paid paternity leave has proved to be very popular with union members.

Jamie Gull and his partner Jo have two children, Benjamin, 5, and six-month old Alexander. "I took two weeks off when my son was born and it made a massive difference," said Jamie. "I enjoyed it and Jo really appreciated having me around. Jo is still on maternity leave and is really enjoying the extra time afforded by the extended period. I know she will feel less anxious about returning to work this time because Alex will be that little bit older."

Wendy Subhan and partner Jason had their second child Joshua in February last year. "The extra three months made a lot of difference," said Wendy. "At the end of the nine months Joshua was more settled and I was much readier to go back to work."
