Minimum wage campaign: Anne speaks up for the NMW

01 June 2009

Bar worker Anne Meacock from Swansea has spoken out against the Bill.

"I have always earned the minimum wage, as have many people that I know - both women and men.

"Under the Tories some people earned less than £2 an hour and had to work for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week just to make ends meet. With a Labour Government at least we've got a reasonable minimum wage that has increased every year.

"If employers are able to opt out of the minimum wage they'll do it and pay less. I'm finally earning nearly £6 an hour and for my pay to fall would be devastating to my quality of life and my family.

"I can't believe that the Tories are even putting this on the table. I hope that the Labour MPs defeat this Bill, but if we ever get a Tory government it would be disastrous for people like me on low wages."
