New pledge on shop crime

23 July 2009

Usdaw has welcomed the home secretary Alan Johnson’s announcement on tackling anti-social behaviour and retail crime.

Speaking at the launch of the Government's new policy document Building Britain's Future he suggested that police could be meeting with shopworkers and retailers to discuss how best to tackle persistent criminal and anti-social behaviour in stores and shopping precincts.

General secretary John Hannett was delighted with the news. "The Government has always been a strong supporter of our Freedom From Fear campaign. We have always been committed to working with employers, local authorities and the police to deal with anti-social behaviour and persistent offenders.

"We know the police are very busy, but our members deserve to be protected at work. I'm hopeful this latest initiative will move us forward."
