Keep your cool at Christmas and respect shopworkers
19 November 2008
Almost 70
MPs turned
out to
support
Usdaw’s
festive push
for respect for shopworkers
when the union held a
publicity event at
Westminster in October,
three weeks ahead of the
official Respect Week which
was held in early November.
The theme for this year
and the message to
customers is - Keep Your
Cool at Christmas and
respect shopworkers.
General Secretary John
Hannett led a delegation of
retail workers who were
accompanied by a number
of cardboard cut-out
caricatures of the type of
people most likely to abuse
shop staff. These
included the lagerfuelled
yob, a teenage
hoodie, the bad
attitude schoolgirl, the
grumpy granny, and
the bolshie
businessman.
"Christmas is
always particularly
stressful for our
members," said John.
"We wanted to remind
the shopping public to
keep their cool while
shopping and not take out
their frustrations on staff.
This is all about our respect
agenda and our Freedom
From Fear campaign.
"I was delighted 69 MPs
gave their support and
especially Home Secretary
Jacqui Smith who gave us her
backing once again."
