Freedom From Fear Week 2008
06 August 2008
Plans for the Respect for Shopworkers Week from 3 – 7 November are already well under way and activists are being urged to start making their own plans.
As part of the award-winning Freedom From Fear campaign these respect weeks have become an important part of the union's calendar and will involve both national and divisional events across the UK.
First up is an advanced launch at Westminster on Wednesday 15 October while there will be separate events at the Scottish parliament and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies from 3-6 November.
General secretary John Hannett is keen to build on the success of previous years. "It's vital our reps organise an event in their workplaces or local shopping centre to raise the issue of violence and abuse against staff," he said. "While the national events will attract media attention, it's what's going in the locality that's more important. We need to take our message onto the shopfloor that violence and abuse is not part of the job.
"We know that the vast majority of shoppers support our campaign. Most of the big retailers are also on board. But it's also clear that there is a small minority of customers who think they can shout and swear at staff, or even assault them, and think it's acceptable. It's not."
