It’s all happening

29 April 2003

Usdaw will be using every opportunity to promote the Freedom From Fear campaign on the national scene in the coming months at high profile conferences and seminars.

The past

The Freedom From Fear campaign was launched at the Retail Trades conference on October 28. A survey of members' experiences was conducted and the findings were published, with an accompanying video, in a special report Voices from the frontline. This was launched at a special health and safety conference in London on December 2. The campaign, video and report has received critical acclaim and widespread media coverage.

The present

In March, the campaign was showcased at the South Wales and Western and North Eastern divisional conferences. The campaign was also launched at the Scottish Divisional Conference.

In April, the campaign will form the basis of a special debate at the Annual Delegate Meeting, an Executive Council statement will be presented and the Respect magazine will be made available to members. The campaign will also be promoted at the Welsh and Scottish TUC. Model policies on safety and respect for shopworkers have been sent to officials.

The future

In May, the campaign will be promoted at the Association of Convenience Stores Retail Crime Forum, the first in a series of national events. The Respect magazine will also be released to the media, MPs and to Usdaw members at their workplaces.

In June, the campaign will hit parliament with the presentation of the petition to the Prime Minister and a Westminster seminar with MPs and Ministers. Usdaw's black and Asian members will have the chance to produce their own Black voices from the frontline report as part of their national weekend get together .

In July, the campaign will showcase at national events at the House of Commons and the Local Government Association conference.

In September, the National Respect Day for shopworkers will be held on the 17th. Meanwhile, the campaign aims to win publicity and support at the TUC and Labour Party conferences.

In October, the National Women's Conference and the Retail Trades Conference will both provide opportunities to take the campaign further.
