Freedom From Fear campaign lands at Trafford Centre
20 December 2002
Representatives of the shopworkers union Usdaw were overwhelmed by the response from shop staff, managers and shoppers this morning when the union handed out leaflets at the Trafford Centre highlighting the dangers faced by retail workers.
The exercise forms part of Usdaw's Freedom From Fear campaign which aims to put shopworkers' safety top of the industrial and political agenda.
Deputy Divisional Officer Pat Frost led the team at the Trafford Centre. "Last year 20,000 staff were assaulted at work, with an additional 28,000 threatened or abused," she said. "We want to make sure employees and employers are aware of the dangers during the busiest shopping period of the year. We want to see improved safety measures throughout retail, care for victims, and more support from the Government.
"The Trafford Centre is one of the biggest in Europe and gives us the chance to speak to workers and customers alike. The response this morning has been fantastic. We have an important message to get across and that is shopworkers have had enough of violence and abuse in the workplace."
