The facts make very painful and uncomfortable reading

18 June 2005

You can look at the statistics on retail crime whichever way you want, but they all add up to misery for tens of thousands of shopworkers every year. Take a look at these:

  • On average at least one shopworker is attacked or verbally abused every minute of the working day.
  • Violence against staff costs £33 million, include lost wages and profits and this escalates to £186 million.
  • In 2004 there were around 134,800 acts of violence and 991,100 incidents of threatening behaviour.
  • More than 11,000 victims of violence left the industry in 2003, costing employers more than £9 million to replace.
  • Retail crime is costing the UK more than £3.4 billion - £1.7 billion in actual shop thefts which is doubled when the impact on the criminal justice system, business disruption and other costs are included.
  • These overall costs are the equivalent to £115 for every UK tax payer or £58 per head of the population.
