Home Campaigns Freedom From Fear Resources
Full steam ahead for National Respect Day15 August 2003Plans are well advanced in all divisions to promote our first ever National Respect Day for Shopworkers to be held on 17 September. Activists and members have worked extremely hard and the petition of 100,000 signatures, presented by John Hannett, Deputy General Secretary, to 10 Downing Street recently, was a graphic illustration of the importance they attach to this issue. All of our members who have to deal with the public, whether they are call centre workers, delivery drivers, receptionists, insurance agents, etc., can properly identify and play an important part in this campaign. As announced at this year's ADM, the union will be producing a CD to celebrate National Respect Day and promote our Freedom From Fear campaign. This will be launched on the day and details will be sent to branches by John Hannett in due course. This has proved to be one of our most expensive campaigns and your Executive Council, to ensure we don't compromise on quality, have launched a national appeal to branches to contribute to the campaign fund. We realise branches have a number of priorities, but I would urge all branches to be as generous as they can in supporting this important campaign. If our campaign is to have its fullest effect, then we need to increase our presence in the retail sector. There are still many tens of thousands of non-organised workers out there and this is the ideal campaign to draw them into Usdaw. National membership is the highest it has been for over a decade, but we are still not realising our true potential. I urge all of our shop stewards and activists to step up their organising efforts so we can end 2003 with a membership figure of no less than 330,000. Freedom From Fear Resources
