Countdown to the first National Respect for Shopworkers Day
20 August 2003
There are only 29 days to go to the first National Respect for Shopworkers Day – Wednesday 17 September – when premier retail union Usdaw will be urging the shopping public to show some respect to the UK’s retail staff.
The day forms part of the union's Freedom From Fear campaign, which aims to protect shop staff from violence and abuse. Since 1995 more than 118,000 shopworkers have been attacked, more than 250,000 threatened with violence and more than half a million verbally abused.
Campaign leader, Deputy General Secretary John Hannett believes the day will bring the issue to the nation's attention. "We expect to have more than 100 street stalls, promoting the campaign, throughout the UK," he said. "Retail staff are a massive part of the economy and the local community and deserve respect. Our members are telling us 'enough is enough' and giving this campaign their full support. Top employers are also backing us."
Street stalls have already been arranged in the following towns and cities: Bristol - Broadmead, Cardiff, Exeter, Plymouth, Swansea, Chelmsford, Ipswich, London - Acton, Luton, Norwich, Birmingham, Leicester - Haymarket Centre, Leicester - Beaumont Leys, Nottingham, Tamworth, Walsall - Quasar Centre, Wolverhampton, Barnsley, Bradford, Carlisle, Hull, Leeds, Middlesborough, Newcastle, Sheffield, Wakefield, York, Aberdeen, Dumfries, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Andover, Balham, Bermondsey - Surrey Quays, Brighton, Cambridge, Croydon, Guildford, Newport - Isle of Wight, Oxford, Poole, Reading, Southampton, Belfast, Blackpool, Hanley, Liverpool, Manchester City Centre, Manchester - Trafford Centre, Preston, Stockport, Warrington, Harrow, Milton Keynes, Newton Abbot, Torbay, Yeovil, Chatham and Dartford.
