National campaign plays vital safety role

05 January 2006

Usdaw’s Freedom From Fear campaign has made violence and abuse against retail staff a top priority for the last four years.

The union has successfully raised the issue at senior level with politicians, company management, local councillors, police forces and the shopping public across the UK. Annual publicity events have also helped raise the campaign's profile even further over the last few years. This year Usdaw's Respect Day will be held on July 12.

Violent crime went up by 14 per cent and threatening behaviour rose by 35 per cent, employers group the British Retail Consortium has reported.

The number of attacks on staff has reached outrageous levels, said one company boss. Statistics for 2004 reveal there were more than 21,500 assaults on retail staff and more than 251,600 incidents of threats and abuse.
