Campaign success - Malcolm calaby on his academy1 journey14 October 2008Reps and officials at Tesco, Potters Bar organised a lively 24-hour recruitment event around the union’s highly successful Freedom From Fear campaign. "It was a huge success, and helped promote the union and the campaign in a very positive way," said academy organiser Malcolm Calaby. "We've recruited more than 40 new members so far and forms are still coming in. Management are fully on board and gave their full support to the event. "Customers and staff were eager to sign our petition and we also surveyed staff about the problems they've experienced in the store. The response was brilliant. "We even had our community support officer from the local police station reschedule her shift so she could join us on the day and give her support. "All the store reps are fairly new so it helped for them to see first hand what a well organised campaign day can do for everyone. I've revisited the store a couple of times since to help support the reps and there's a real feel-good factor. "Preparation is important. I worked closely with my coach Tracey Low before the event to liaise with management and build up a good relationship - this has really paid dividends. "I'm enjoying every minute of the academy. My background is in distribution so recruiting in retail has been just the challenge I needed - the results have been amazing." Freedom From Fear Further Information
