Recruiting migrant & agency workers
20 May 2007
Usdaw was one of the first unions to launch its own recruitment leaflet in different languages.
The leaflet - Six Good Reasons to Join Usdaw - is available in 35 different languages and was designed to support the hard work reps and officers are doing to reach out to migrant and agency workers. It is proving to be a real help, writes equalities officer Ruth Cross.
This isn't one of those leaflets that sits on a shelf - it is a practical tool to help us recruit and organise workers whose first language isn't English, workers who really need the protection of Usdaw. Just look what happened when reps in the Midlands division used the leaflet.
Area organiser Sarah Hughes and Barry Campbell a stand down rep took copies of the leaflet into the Morrisons distribution site at Thrapston and recruited nearly 60 migrant workers. "We took most of the languages along but mostly we used the Polish, Kurdish and Portuguese ones. We found it really valuable in generating interest in Usdaw and in showing workers there that we were making the effort to reach out to them. Before long area organiser Charlie McClaren had a queue of workers wanting to join and looking to Usdaw to help them with problems at work.
