Should shops open on Christmas Day?
22 December 2003
Shopworkers' union Usdaw is urging shoppers to respond to a BBC News Online survey into Christmas Day trading.
The BBC news web site carried a story on its business pages today (Monday), in relation to Usdaw's Protect Christmas Day campaign. Usdaw wants stores larger than 3,000 square feet (280 square metres) to be banned from opening on Christmas Day.
Although not many large retailers have opened on Christmas Day in the past, Usdaw fears it is only a matter of time before they do - and that, as there were not be enough volunteers, many of our members would be forced to do so.
The union is backing two Private Members' Bills on the subject.
The first reading of Labour MP Kevan Jones' Christmas Day (Trading) Bill takes place in the House of Commons on 7th January 2004. This would ban all stores larger than 3,000 square feet from opening on Christmas Day in England and Wales.
Karen Whitefield MSP has brought a Private Member's Bill before the Scottish Parliament, calling for shops larger than 3,000 square feet to be banned from opening on Christmas Day and New Year's Day in Scotland.
Have your say in the BBC News Online survey.
