Protect New Year's Day in Scotland

Some retailers in Scotland have started to open on New Year's Day. Usdaw's Protect New Year's Day in Scotland Campaign addresses the concerns and worries of our members in Scotland about the possibility of being forced into work on this very special day.

Karen Whitefield MSP promoted a Bill in the Scottish Parliament to outlaw the opening of large shops on 25 December and 1 January. The Bill was passed in March 2007, with the immediate implementation of the Christmas Day ban and a delayed New Year's Day ban subject to further research. However the Scottish National Party won the May 2007 Scottish General Election.

One of the first acts of the new SNP Government was to cancel the research project, which was necessary to deliver the New Year's Day trading ban. Despite supporting the project before the election, they are now refusing to gather the evidence and make a proper assessment of what the widespread opening of stores would mean for Scotland's shopworkers and the special nature of New Year's Day.

Usdaw's campaign seeks to get the whole of the Christmas Day & New Year's Day Trading (Scotland) Bill enacted.
